Disability Self-Identification & Reasonable Accommodations at Wolt Germany

At Wolt, we are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive workplace where everyone has the tools, resources, and opportunities to thrive. This page explains how you can voluntarily self-identify as having a disability, the benefits of doing so, and how to request reasonable accommodations.

What is a disability?

A disability isn’t only about wheelchairs or visible injuries. In Germany, many long-term health conditions — both visible and invisible — can be recognised as a disability if they make everyday life or work harder.

Examples that might sound familiar:

  • Ongoing back, knee or joint pain that makes lifting or standing for hours difficult;

  • Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma or HIV;

  • Mental-health conditions like depression, anxiety or PTSD

  • Hearing loss or vision problems (even if you use glasses, contact lenses or a hearing aid and can still ride or drive)

  • Neurodivergence conditions such as ADHD or autism spectrum disorder;

  • Injuries that left lasting balance, coordination or mobility issues

If a doctor confirms that your condition affects you for at least six months, the German authority may rate it with a “degree of disability” (Grad der Behinderung, GdB) between 20 % and 100 %.

Disability System in Germany

Germany has a structured system for recognizing and supporting individuals with disabilities. This system assigns a percentage based on the severity of a person’s impairment. The higher the percentage, the greater the recognition and access to benefits.

✔If your degree of disability (Grad der Behinderung - GdB) is 50% or higher, you qualify as a severely disabled employee (Schwerbehinderte) and are entitled to additional workplace protections and benefits.

✔ If you have a degree of disability of 30%-50%, you can apply for equal status if you experience significant workplace disadvantages without it.  You can do it  by applying through the employment agency. The application to the employment agency (Agentur für Arbeit) can be made in person, by telephone, in writing, or online.

How to Get Your Health Status Recognized?

To apply for a disability certificate (Schwerbehindertenausweis), follow these steps:

  1. Gather Documentation: Obtain medical records from your doctors detailing your condition and how it impacts daily life. You do not need a formal assessment.

  2. Submit an Application: Apply through the Versorgungsamt (Pension Office) in your state. In most regions, applications can be submitted online via this federal portal.

  3. Await Assessment: The government will review your medical records and assign a GdB score (ranging from 20 to 100). If you disagree with the assessment, you have the right to appeal.

  4. Receive Your Disability Certificate: If your GdB is 50 or higher, you will receive a Schwerbehindertenausweis. If your GdB is at least 30 but less than 40, you may apply for equal status (Gleichstellungsantrag) through the Agentur für Arbeit for additional protections.
